From education to medicine to film, BMO scholarship supports future leaders
Nyla Newell from Chicago, Illinois is a talented individual. She can play the piano and flute – and she can also tap dance!
But the most remarkable thing about Nyla is her ambition to make a difference for youth in her community.
This fall, Nyla is pursuing that dream as she enters her first year of Education Studies at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She is also a proud recipient of the BMO200 William A. Downe Scholarship.
Nyla says the scholarship will help her achieve her goals by alleviating some of the financial stress associated with post-secondary studies. “This scholarship will allow me more time to focus on my studies, join programs and do community service,” she explains.
Nyla is one of 10 scholarship recipients selected by the Loran Scholars Foundation for demonstrated academic achievement, community involvement and leadership potential. Each recipient is a child or legal ward of a BMO employee, and will receive CDN$10,000 for their first year of studies.
Congratulations to the BMO200 William A. Downe Scholarship recipients for 2024! BMO is proud to support the educational goals and ambitions of these future leaders.
Meet the 2024 scholarship recipients
The BMO200 William A. Downe Scholarship Program was created in 2017 to mark the end of a year-long celebration of BMO’s bicentennial and pay tribute to Bill Downe’s 10 years as Chief Executive Officer, recognizing his strong support of education.
