BMO Harris Bank first to offer True Name feature for debit cards
Mastercard and BMO have announced that BMO will be the first bank globally to implement True NameTM on BMO Harris Mastercard Debit Cards in the U.S. The new offering will allow BMO Harris customers to use their chosen name on the front of their cards, without the requirement of a legal name change.
For many in the transgender and non-binary communities in particular, the name on their card does not reflect their true identity, leading to negative customer experiences. Nearly one-third of individuals who show ID with a name or gender that does not match their presentation have been harassed, denied services, and/or attacked as a result. Mastercard announced the True Name initiative during WorldPride 2019 in response to these issues.
“Breaking down barriers to inclusion requires bold action,” said Ernie Johannson, group head for North American Personal and U.S. Business Banking at BMO. “We are bringing True Name to BMO to embrace our cardholders’ true identities and empower them to make real financial progress without fear of discrimination.”
